At least nine people have been killed in Columbus County northwest of Wilmington after at least one tornado touched down this morning, authorities say.

The storm leveled a trailer park in the community of Armour, about three miles west of Riegelwood near the Cape Fear River. Trees and debris from the storm have blocked roads, including N.C. 87.

"There was a trailer park that was completely flattened," said Linda Simmons, a volunteer with Columbus County Emergency Management. "There was a two-story brick home that was totally destroyed. There was another mobile home that was picked up and set down in another area."
