Hurricane Lane in the eastern Pacific is now packing sustained winds of 110 mph and strengthening. A quick look at Lane shows that it has developed a pin-hole eye that is helping it strengthen very quickly. Lane is a very small hurricane, but looks to become a very intense one. While it is fortunate that the area affected by Lane will be small, it is going to be very destructive. The same type of pin-hole eye was responsible for the rapid intensification of Hurricane Wilma last year. However, such an eye structure is not very stable and usually breaks down after a day.
